Charleston historic district vacation rental exterior with original piazza

If you're searching for Charleston historic district vacation rentals, you want two things. Architecture that feels like Charleston and not a chain hotel, and a location you can walk from.

We can give you both. What we won't do is pretend our homes sit inside a boundary they don't. Our historic Charleston vacation rentals are in Cannonborough-Elliottborough, Radcliffeborough and the Westside, on the upper peninsula just north of Calhoun Street. The Historic District begins a few blocks south.

That short walk is the whole reason our nightly rates work the way they do, and it's why guests who care about the money as much as the setting keep booking this part of town.

Where Our Historic Charleston Vacation Rentals Sit

Charleston's Old and Historic District came out of the city's 1931 zoning ordinance, the first preservation ordinance in the United States, and the Board of Architectural Review has governed what happens inside it ever since. The National Register district that followed covers most of the peninsula below Calhoun Street. You can see the exact lines on the city's own historic districts map.

Our neighborhoods sit above that line. They're older than the boundary suggests and they've been residential the whole time, which is the part that matters when you're choosing where to sleep. Working streets rather than a museum block. Corner stores, dogs, people going to work.

From most of our vacation rentals near the Historic District you're crossing Calhoun in under ten minutes on foot.

Historic Charleston Vacation Rentals for Two Guests

Suite One, Suite Two and Cannon 407. All three are on our rentals for two page. One bedroom each, sleeping two, with full kitchens or kitchenettes, private entry and high speed Wi-Fi. These are the ones couples book for a long weekend, and they're the closest thing we have to a walk-everywhere base.

Rentals for Four Guests

Pool House, 2 Charles, 18 Carolina and 179 St. Philip D, all on our rentals that sleep four. Same one-bedroom footprint with added sleeping space, so friends travelling together or a couple with kids get room without paying for a whole house. Pool House shares access to a heated saltwater pool set in a garden courtyard, which in July is not a small thing.

Large and Luxury Rentals Near Charleston's Historic District

118 President A, 118 President B, 33 B Cannon, 179 St. Philip E, 3 Tully, and 118 President Street as an entire home. All of these sit on our large rentals page. Multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, full kitchens, real living areas. If you want luxury rentals in the Charleston Historic District area, these are the ones wedding parties and reunions end up in.

Walking Distances to the Charleston Historic District

Walking times from the Cannonborough-Elliottborough cluster. Individual properties vary by a few minutes either way.

Destination Approx. distance Approx. walk
Calhoun Street, district edge 0.3 mi 6 minutes
Upper King Street dining 0.3 mi 6 minutes
Marion Square 0.4 mi 8 minutes
MUSC and the hospital district 0.5 mi 10 minutes
Charleston City Market 1.1 mi 22 minutes
Waterfront Park 1.4 mi 28 minutes
Rainbow Row 1.5 mi 30 minutes
White Point Garden and the Battery 1.9 mi 38 minutes

The Battery is a proper walk. Most guests do it once, on the day they've set aside for the south end, and take a rideshare or a pedicab back. Everything above City Market is casual.

Landmarks Near Your Charleston Historic District Vacation Rental

Rainbow Row, the pastel stretch on East Bay that ends up on every postcard. The Battery and White Point Garden, where the Ashley and Cooper rivers meet. St. Michael's at Broad and Meeting, standing since the 1750s. The French Quarter galleries. Charleston City Market runs four blocks off Meeting Street. The National Park Service keeps a good overview of what makes the peninsula significant.

All of it is south of you, and all of it is reachable on foot from a base that costs less per night.

Closer to home, upper King Street is where a lot of the city's best cooking has moved to. Marion Square holds the farmers market on Saturday mornings from spring through autumn. You're between the two. Explore our Local favorites.

Historic Vacation Rentals in Charleston With Real Architecture

Charleston's signature is the single house. One room wide, gable end facing the street, tiered piazzas running down the side to catch the breeze off the harbour. You'll see them all over the upper peninsula, not only below Broad. The South Carolina Department of Archives and History has documented the styles across the district, from Georgian through Queen Anne.

If you want historic vacation rentals in Charleston that reflect the city's unique architecture rather than imitating it, this is the honest version. Our buildings are real ones, restored rather than reproduced, and they carry original features we've kept where we could.

Floors creak. Doorframes aren't perfectly square. That's not a defect, it's the building being a hundred and something years old, and it's most of why you booked a rental instead of a hotel room.

Unique Boutique Vacation Rentals Near the Historic District

Boutique gets used loosely. Here is what it means with us.

Bright & Secluded Apartment with Pool Access

Bright & Secluded Apartment with Pool Access

CHC is a small owner-operated portfolio, not a management company with three hundred listings. No two of our units share a layout, because no two of the buildings do. Each one is furnished individually. When you call, you speak to someone who has stood in the room you're asking about.

That is the practical difference between unique boutique vacation rentals near Charleston's Historic District and a random result on an aggregator, where the photos are staged and nobody local answers the phone.

Affordable Vacation Rentals Near Charleston's Historic District

Nightly rates south of Broad are what they are. You're paying for the postcard.

Move north of Calhoun and the number drops noticeably while the walk stays short. That trade is the single biggest reason guests choose this side of town, and it is why affordable vacation rentals near the Charleston Historic District tend to be found up here rather than inside it.

You get the same walkable access to the same landmarks, a full kitchen so you're not eating out three times a day, and a neighborhood that is still a neighborhood.

Old Buildings, Current Systems

Old bones, current systems. Every stay includes private entry, high speed Wi-Fi, a smart TV, contactless check-in, and a full kitchen or kitchenette.

Select properties add in-unit laundry, a private balcony or outdoor space, pet-friendly rooms, and access to the heated saltwater pool. Filters on each listing show which is which, so you're not guessing.

Air conditioning matters here more than anywhere. Charleston summers are humid in a way that surprises first-time visitors, and a historic building with modern HVAC is a very different experience from one without.

Parking, Honestly

Parking on the peninsula is tight. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

Some of our properties include a dedicated off-street space. Others rely on street parking or a nearby city garage. Each listing states what it has, and if you're driving in you should choose on that basis before you choose on anything else.

One thing worth knowing. Staying north of Calhoun means you can leave the car parked and walk into the district, rather than circling the south end looking for a space every morning. Guests who plan around that have a much better week.

Not sure whether to bring a car at all? Our guide on getting around Charleston covers it.
