That is the short answer. The longer one depends on what you are optimizing for, because Charleston in October and Charleston in July are close to different cities.

Climate figures throughout this guide are based on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 US Climate Normals, the standard 30-year averages. Charleston has more than one reporting station and downtown differs slightly from the airport, so treat these as typical rather than exact for any given block.
What is the best month to visit Charleston?
October. Warm days, cooler evenings, drier than summer and past the peak of hurricane season. April is the close second and is better if you want gardens in bloom.

Warm enough to be outside all day, cool enough at night to sit on a piazza. Drier than the summer months. The spring crowds have gone and the holiday crowds have not arrived.
The catch is that everyone who knows this books October, so it is not a cheap month.
April
The other answer, and the better one if the gardens are why you are coming. Charleston in April is the version on the postcards.
It is also one of the most expensive and most booked months of the year.
November, the one people miss
Mild, one of the driest months, and noticeably quieter than October. If your priority is walking the city comfortably without paying peak rates, November is an underrated option: mild weather, the lowest normal monthly rainfall, and less summer heat.
When is the cheapest time to visit Charleston?
January and February are generally the quieter winter months, with cooler temperatures and fewer visitors than the spring and fall peaks. If your priority is price, compare winter dates before assuming another month is cheaper.
Charleston winters are mild compared with much of the U.S., although nights can get cold. Days are mild, nights get cold, and snow is rare enough that when it happens people still talk about it years later.
What you give up: no gardens, shorter days, and some seasonal businesses on reduced hours. What you gain: the historic streets without the crowds, and dinner reservations you can actually get.
Two other things do more for a Charleston budget than the month does. A kitchen, because eating out three times a day is where a Charleston trip gets expensive. And length of stay, since stays of thirty nights or more price on an entirely different basis.
When should you avoid Charleston?
Late July through early September, if heat and humidity bother you. It is the hottest and wettest stretch of the year and it overlaps the peak of hurricane season.
Nobody in the top search results will say this plainly, so here it is.
August is the wettest month of the year and one of the two hottest. Afternoon thunderstorms are routine rather than unusual. Walking the peninsula at 2pm in August is genuinely unpleasant, and the peninsula is a walking city.
September is generally less busy than the spring and peak summer periods, although prices vary by dates and events.
None of this means do not come. Plenty of people have excellent August trips. It means come knowing, plan around the afternoons, and book somewhere with air conditioning you trust and ideally a pool.
What about hurricane season?
Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the greatest activity typically occurring from mid-August through mid-October. A trip during hurricane season does not mean a hurricane will affect your dates, but it is worth checking the forecast and cancellation policy before you travel.
Hurricane season is a six-month window, not a six-month emergency. The National Hurricane Center publishes the climatology, and the practical version for a visitor is short.
- Watch the forecast in the week before you travel, not months ahead.
- Check the cancellation policy of anywhere you book, and check it properly, because policies vary a lot between operators.
- Consider travel insurance for trips in the September peak.
When are the Charleston festivals?
Two of Charleston's major annual festivals are Charleston Wine + Food in March and Spoleto Festival USA from late May into June.

Families
Late spring or early autumn, when the weather is warm enough for a beach day but the peninsula is still walkable in the afternoon. Properties that sleep four with a kitchen change the economics of a family trip more than the month does.
Groups and celebrations
Spring and autumn weekends, which is also when they are hardest to book. If you are bringing a group, start with the larger homes and work the dates around what is available, not the other way round.
A longer stay or remote work
Winter into early spring. Rates are lowest, the city is at its most livable, and monthly stays from thirty nights price differently again.
