A crowd gathers under a night sky to watch colorful fireworks at a lively New year’s eve

New Year's Eve 2026 falls on Thursday December 31. Charleston Wonderland runs 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Festival Hall, and a family party at the South Carolina Aquarium is listed for 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Because it is a Thursday, the King Street overnight parking ban applies.

Most New Year's Eve guides give you a list of parties and stop there. The list is the easy part. What costs you the evening is parking, and in 2026 the weekday changes the rules.

Everything below was checked against the organizer or the City of Charleston on October 14, 2026, and this guide says which source each detail came from. Holiday pages move, so check again closer to the night.

Which New Year's Eve Events Have 2026 Dates?

Two carry dated 2026 details. Others are annual traditions whose organizers had not posted this year's times when this guide was checked, which is normal in October.

EventStatus as of October 14, 2026Where the detail comes from
Charleston Wonderland, Festival Hall, 56 Beaufain StreetDATED AND ON SALE. 13th annual. Thursday December 31, 2026, 8:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. on January 1, 2027. Tickets on sale. No price published on the organizer's pageThe organizer's own website
New Year's Eve at Aquarium Aglow, South Carolina Aquarium, 100 Aquarium WharfDATED, BUT NOT BY THE AQUARIUM. The visitor bureau lists Thursday December 31, 2026, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., $39.95 for ages 13 and over, $34.95 for ages 3 to 12, toddlers free, members 20 percent off. The aquarium's own site carries a New Year's Eve heading with no date, time or price under itCharleston Area CVB event listing, checked against the aquarium's own pages
Folly Beach fireworks and flip-flop dropNOT DATED BY THE CITY. An established annual tradition. The City of Folly Beach had published no 2026 details and its December calendar was empty. A visitor-site page does carry times, with a date problem noted belowCity of Folly Beach, read directly
Restaurant, rooftop and harbor cruise programsVARIES. Several operators run New Year's Eve programs. None was individually verified for this guide, so none is given a time or a price hereNot verified individually
City of Charleston road closuresNOT PUBLISHED. No New Year's Eve notice appeared in the city's news flash when this guide was checked. That is not the same as no closures being plannedCity of Charleston news flash
BUY FROM THE ORGANIZER, AND CHECK THE EDITION NUMBER: Two things worth knowing before you book anything. A sold out notice for Charleston Wonderland is still circulating. It names the 12th annual event; the organizer's page now lists the 13th annual with tickets on sale, so that notice is a year old. And the aquarium party is published in more detail by the visitor bureau than by the aquarium itself, which is common with holiday events. Find the event on a calendar if that is easier, then confirm the date, time and price with the venue before you pay.

What Day Does New Year's Eve Fall On in 2026, and Why Does It Matter?

Berlin's, Charleston, SC Traditional Stores

Thursday, December 31. In most cities that is trivia. In downtown Charleston it changes where you are allowed to leave a car.

The City of Charleston prohibits street parking on King Street between Spring and John streets from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. New Year's Eve 2026 is a Thursday, so that ban is in force for the whole evening and past midnight. If your plan involves upper King Street, it cannot involve parking on upper King Street.

The City of Charleston names two garages as the alternative on that stretch, both at the standard rate: Midtown at 558 King Street and Marion Square at 399 King Street. Follow the signage on the night either way, since posted restrictions take precedence over anything a guide tells you.

Where Can You Park Downtown on New Year's Eve?

City garages run at $1 per 20 minutes with a $24 daily maximum. Three of them list a flat evening rate after 5 p.m., which covers the hours a New Year's Eve night actually runs.

City garageAddressEvening rateWhat to know
93 Queen Street93 Queen Street$7 flat after 3 p.m., $5 flat after 5 p.m.The only one of the three with an earlier tier, at $7 from 3 p.m. rather than 5 p.m.
East Bay and Prioleau25 Prioleau Street$5 flat after 5 p.m.Standard rate otherwise
Majestic211 King Street$5 flat after 5 p.m.On King Street itself, which the overnight street ban does not apply to
Midtown558 King StreetNo flat evening rate publishedNamed by the city as the upper King alternative at $1 per 20 minutes
Marion Square399 King StreetNo flat evening rate publishedNamed by the city as the upper King alternative at $1 per 20 minutes

These are the city's standing published rates, not special New Year's Eve pricing. Nothing has been announced for the night itself, so treat the table as what normally applies rather than as a holiday offer.

THE 3 A.M. DETAIL THAT CATCHES PEOPLE OUT: The discounted evening rates end at 3:00 a.m., and the regular garage rate takes over from that moment. A party that finishes at 1 a.m. sits comfortably inside the flat rate. One that runs to 4 a.m. does not. If you are staying out past 3, budget for the regular rate rather than the $5 you drove in on. Our guide to parking in downtown Charleston covers the rest of the year.

Two more things the city publishes. A lost ticket in a city garage costs $50, though the separate non-metered lot at 180 Lockwood lists $60, so the figure depends on the facility. And on-street meters and metered lots require payment from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, excluding Sundays and official city holidays, so read the signage beside you rather than assuming the meter is off.

Are There Fireworks in Charleston on New Year's Eve?

Fireworks at Folly beach

Folly Beach is where the fireworks usually are, not the peninsula. Its 2026 details had not been posted by the City of Folly Beach when this guide was checked, so treat it as likely rather than booked.

The event is a long-running tradition that combines a fireworks show with a giant flip-flop lowered at midnight, and in past years Center Street has closed to traffic for the evening. The City of Folly Beach has published none of that for 2026, and its December calendar was empty. A Folly Beach visitor page does carry times, but on the day this guide was checked that page dated the event to a Wednesday, and December 31, 2026 is a Thursday, so its times are not reproduced here. Check the city's own calendar in December.

On the peninsula, the City of Charleston had not posted a New Year's Eve notice of any kind when this guide was written. If road closures are planned downtown they will appear in the city's news flash, and that is the place to look in the last week of December.

Where Should You Stay for New Year's Eve in Charleston?

Somewhere you can walk home from. That is the whole argument on a night when parking rules tighten and taxi and rideshare demand climbs.

CHC's homes sit north of Calhoun Street in Cannonborough-Elliottborough, Radcliffeborough and the Westside, which puts them on the upper King Street side of the peninsula. 179 St. Philip E and 3 Tully each state on their own listing that they are one block from upper King Street. If you are staying one block off King, the overnight parking ban on King stops being your problem.

Two practical notes for this particular night. Check-in is 4 p.m., which on December 31 means arriving with time to spare rather than cutting it fine. And read the house rules on the specific listing you are booking: several CHC listings state that parties are not allowed and that violating the rule results in immediate eviction, so a rental is the place you come back to rather than the venue itself.

How Should You Plan the Night?

Work backwards from midnight. Four things are worth settling in advance.

  • Buy from the organizer, not from a listing. Several Charleston New Year's Eve events are listed in more detail by third-party calendars than by the venues themselves. The calendar is a good place to find the event and a poor place to confirm it.
  • Check the edition number, not just the year. A sold out notice for Charleston Wonderland names the 12th annual event. The organizer's page now lists the 13th. One digit is the difference between this year and last.
  • Settle the parking before anything else. The flat evening rate at three city garages ends at 3 a.m., and the regular rate takes over from that point.
  • If you are heading to upper King Street, do not plan to park on it. The overnight street ban between Spring and John applies on Thursday nights, and December 31 is a Thursday this year.

FAQs

Two events carry dated 2026 details. Charleston Wonderland at Festival Hall runs 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m., and a family party at the South Carolina Aquarium is listed for 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Restaurants, rooftops and harbor cruises run their own programs.

Thursday, December 31, 2026. That matters in Charleston because the city prohibits street parking on King Street between Spring and John streets from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, so the ban is in force on New Year's Eve.

The South Carolina Aquarium runs one. The visitor bureau lists it for Thursday December 31, 2026, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., at $39.95 for ages 13 and over and $34.95 for ages 3 to 12, with toddlers free. Confirm with the aquarium before booking.

City garages charge $1 per 20 minutes with a $24 daily maximum. Three of them, 93 Queen Street, East Bay and Prioleau, and Majestic on King Street, list a $5 flat rate after 5 p.m. That discount ends at 3 a.m.

Not when this guide was checked. The organizer's own page listed tickets on sale for the 13th annual event on December 31, 2026. A sold out notice circulating online names the 12th annual event, which was a year earlier. Check the organizer's page.
